Natural isotopic composition of nitrogen in suspended particulate matter in the Bay of Bengal

چکیده
We present the first measurements of nitrogen isotopic composition (δ15N) in suspended particulate matter (SPM) of the surface Bay of Bengal (BOB) at 24 different locations during pre(April–May 2003) and post(September– October 2002) monsoon seasons. The δ15N values of particulate organic nitrogen (PON) in surface suspended matter of coastal and northern open BOB show mixing between continental inputs and marine sources. Dilution by continental material brought in by rivers leads to consistently lower δ15N, evident from the relationship between surface salinity and δ15N. δ15N values of surface PON of open ocean locations during both seasons, and also at coastal locations during premonsoon suggest nitrate from deeper waters to be a predominant source of nutrients for phytoplankton. The depth profiles of δ15N of PON during the premonsoon season at nine different locations indicate an increase in δ15N by a maximum of 2.8‰ between euphotic depth and 300 m. These changes are less than those observed in the far eastern Indian Ocean, indicating higher sinking rates of particles ballasted by aggregates of organic and mineral matter in BOB.

A study on the composition of size-fractionated suspended particulate matter in shallow coastal waters of Chabahar Bay
Abstract In the present study, sampling and analysis of size-fractionated suspended particulate matter (SPM) in coastal waters of Chabahar Bay have been done for the first time. Sampling has been conducted on December 25 of 2018 from 5 stations in different locations of the Bay in order to evaluate the effects of natural and human activities on SPM mass and composition. With an overall average...

Natural nitrogen isotopic composition (δ(15)N) of suspended particulate organic matter (POM) and nitrogen fixation rates via (15)N(2) assay were measured in surface waters along 120° E from 30° N to 30° S in the Asian marginal seas (the East/South China Seas and the Sulu/Celebes/Java Seas) and the northeastern Indian Ocean in November-December 2005 and March 2006. The POM δ(15)N values ranged f...
متن کاملIsotopic composition of suspended particulate nitrogen ( D 15 Nsus ) in surface waters of the Atlantic Ocean from 50 N to 50 S
[1] Isotopic composition of suspended particulate nitrogen (dNsus) has been studied in near-surface waters along a transect extending from 50 N to 50 S in the Atlantic Ocean. The dNsus values ranged from 0.8 to +5.4% and showed a significant correlation with depth of nitracline (dNsus = 0.047 DNO3 + 5.706; R 2 = 0.81, n = 15) in nutrients-depleted regions (45 N–40 S). This inverse relationship ...
متن کاملSpatial and Temporal Variations in Stable Carbon (δ13C) and Nitrogen (δ15N) Isotopic Composition of Symbiotic Scleractinian Corals
Tropical scleractinian corals are considered autotrophic as they rely mainly on photosynthesis-derived nutrients transferred from their photosymbionts. Corals are also able to capture and ingest suspended particulate organic matter, so heterotrophy can be an important supplementary trophic pathway to optimize coral fitness. The aim of this in situ study was to elucidate the trophic status of 10...

Background: In addition to gas pollutants, many chemicals and air pollutants are in the form of particulate matter. Particulate matter consists of a complex mixture of variable sized particles and physicochemical composition. These particles mainly contain minerals including Fe, Al, Ca, K, Cu, Ti, Mn, Ni, V and their size, chemical composition and concentration are important to assess ...
